Some Questions About Water

When my housemates and I were having dinner yesterday night, someone brought out some interesting questions:

  1. There is a boat on a lake, and inside the boat there is a guy and a stone. The guy throws the stone out of the boat. Will the water level of the lake rise, fall, or remain the same? Here the water level is in reference to the land, not the water level of the boat. Also, assume that the total water volume of the lake is constant.

  2. What if instead of a stone, the person breaks a wooden plank from the boat and throw it into the lake? Assume that the plank is less dense than the water.

  3. You are swimming on the lake. You peed. What will happen to the water level of the lake? What if you are diving instead of swimming?

  4. You are sitting on a bath tub with the plug on and some water in the tub. You peed. What will happen to the water level?

  5. Same with 4, but instead of peeing, you poo-ed. What will happen to the water level? What about fart? (Thanks to Thow Kong for the brilliant question. :P)
Question 1 is supposedly one of the questions asked during the Oxford university interview. If you are able to solve number 1, you should be able to do the rest since they are kind of similar. Contact Thow Kong for the answer to the last question.

The Other Side Revealed!

Two years ago, I wrote this post on the joyous day of my homecoming. Not many people realised what it meant.

The answer is: they are the antipodes of my travel origin and destination.

In other words, if I digg a hole straight down from Melbourne and go through the whole Earth's interior, I will come out in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. If If I digg a hole from Malaysia, it will come out some where in Ecuador, South America!

Try to find out where your favourite location's antipode is: Link. If you stay in US, don't bother: you are going to drink salt water in Indian Ocean. The next time your kid ask you "what's at the other end of the Earth", don't tell them it's China.

Note: This is part of my effort to clear up my "unfinished posts".

Making The Right Choice

thinker21Everyday we are confronted with numerous occasions which call for decision-making, and quite often the decisions are related to numbers.

For example, given two options of sugar in a supermarket,

  • A one-kilogram package which costs one dollar,
  • A five-kilogram package which costs four dollars.
Which one would you buy?

Some people reckon that the latter is the better choice, since it is "just eighty cents per kilo". However, some others might say that the former is better because you do not risk the sugar expiring before you finish it, the quality might deteriorate if it's left for too long, "you do not need five kilograms anyway", and so on. Well, there's no clear winning side here, as each pros and cons are weighed differently by different people.

On another occasion, a similar dilemma arose in the issue of tram tickets. As a background, there are a few choices for the prepaid tram tickets, namely two-hourly tickets, daily, and 10 X two-hour. Daily is out of the question because it could be replaced by an equivalent of two two-hourly tickets. So We could buy separate two-hourly tickets (which cost 3.30 dollar each) or buy a ticket with 10 two-hourly values (which costs 27.60 dollar).

Naturally, 10 X two-hourly ticket seems to be the best option. But here comes the real problem - how many of them should we buy? We know very well that there is a price increase every year or two, so if we stock up the tickets we would not need to buy expensive tickets in the future. However, buying lots of tickets turned out not to be the best choice after all - we figured out that at the present rate of bank interest and the predicted price increase every year, we might as well buy the ticket after the price increase, because by that time the bank interest we earn would have covered the price difference. It's quite a bit of tricky maths.

The last case I would like to talk about here is related to medicine. You might think, hey, what does medicine have to do with mathematics? Is it the doctor's bills? Hah let me reassure you that billing is not the main use of maths in medicine. As I mentioned in another post, a lot of medical researches deal with epidemiology and statistics which involve a lot of mathematical application.

Amidst the figures of risks, benefits, odds, ratios and so on, it's very common for people to be misled by default or by design. Take this example:
They [Tom Fahey and colleagues] wrote to 182 board members of district health authorities in England (all of whom would be in some way responsible for making important health service decisions), asking them which of four different rehabilitation programmes for heart attack victims they would prefer to fund:
  • Programme A reduced the rate of deaths by 20%;
  • Programme B produced an absolute reduction in deaths of 3%;
  • Programme C increased patients' survival rate from 84% to 87%;
  • Programme D meant that 31 people needed to enter the programme to avoid one death.
"How to Read a Paper" by Trisha Greenhalgh, 1997
Before you read on, give it a second of thought - which one would you choose? Which one is the most effective, and which one is the least effective?

The book author, Greenhalgh, proceeded to tell us the right answer: all of them are describing the same effect. Many of the health authorities (and I believe many of us as well) didn't notice it:
Of the 140 board members who responded, only three spotted that all four "programmes" in fact related to the same set of results. The other 137 preferred one or other of the programmes, thus revealing (as well as their own ignorance) the need for better basic training in epidemiology for health authority board members.
As a numerical example, let's say when the patients do not enter any program, 84 out of 100 patients survived; while for the rehabilitation program, 87 out of 100 patients survived. Rate of death is reduced from 16% to 13%, and therefore:
  • A) It's a (16-13/16) X 100% ≈ 20% death reduction .
  • B) The absolute death reduction is 16% - 13% = 3%.
  • C) From the figure directly.
  • D) Since the absolute death reduction is 3%, it means that 3 out of 100 patients have benefited through the rehabilitation program. That ratio is equivalent to 1 in 30 patients saved (rounded to the nearest ten, considering the significant digits).
It's amazing just how manipulable our mind is when it comes to numbers. The next time when you see a promotion claiming "buy two free one", remember that it's equivalent to 33% discount. For some reasons, "buy two free one" might seem more attractive to certain people than, say, 40% discount.

Errm.

Brain Teasers

I like brain teasers. I discovered a site with a few fun questions yesterday, and here are some of the questions:

A train leaves New York for Boston. Five minutes later another train leaves Boston for New York, at double the speed. Which train will be closer to New York when they encounter?
If I go halfway to the town (which is 60 km away) at the speed of 30 km/hour, how fast do I have to go for the rest of the way to have the average speed of the entire way 60 km/hour?
These are the conditions in a town:
  1. No two inhabitants have the same number of hairs on their head.
  2. No inhabitant has exactly 518 hairs.
  3. There are more inhabitants than any inhabitant's hair in the town.
What is the highest possible number of inhabitants?
An Arab sheikh tells his two sons to race their camels to a distant city to see who will inherit his fortune. The one whose camel is slower will win. The brothers, after wandering aimlessly for days, ask a wise man for advice. After hearing the advice they jump on the camels and race as fast as they can to the city.

What does the wise man say?
Three masters of logic wanted to find out who was the wisest one. So they invited the grand master, who took them into a dark room and said: "I will paint each one of you a red or a blue dot on your forehead. When you walk out and you see at least one red point, raise your hands. The one who says what colour is the dot on his own forehead first, wins." Then he painted only red dots on every one. When they went out everybody had their hands up and after a while one of them said: "I have a red dot on my head."

How could he be so sure?
Imagine you are in a room with 3 switches. In an adjacent room there are 3 bulbs (all are off at the moment), each switch belongs to one bulb. It is impossible to see from one room to another. How can you find out which switch belongs to which bulb, if you may enter the room with the bulbs only once?
Check out the solutions in the puzzle page! :) Sharpening our mind sometimes helps it works better.

Smile!!

SMILEWe often smile. Well probably not, some people smile more often than the others. But still, we smile. In a Western country, it's a common virtue to smile to someone you see on the street or in a lift (although it's not advisable to do the same in Malaysia - you get weird stares). You smile when you go for an interview, hoping that it exudes an aura of friendliness.

The issue with smile is, many people fake it. If you think that faking smile is something done by only fake people, you should slap yourself on your face. Because... remember the last time you took a picture? Weren't you squeezing a smile?

Everyone fakes their smiley face when they take pictures. Everyone. Unless you find it amusing every time a cold round lens is pointing at you, of course.

So here comes an interesting problem: how do we differentiate between a genuine smile and fake smile? Do you think that you are good at body language? Do you consider yourself a living lie detector? Have you ever thought that, "Hey, isn't it good if I could tell whether this little cute girl was amused by my lame joke yesterday?"

Let's try this experiment to find out: BBC Science & Nature: Spot the Fake Smile. In this short game, you will be shown brief video clips of people smiling at you, and you will decide whether the smile is real or fake. When you have finished this experiment, share your results here! :)

I got 15 out of 20, which was surprising as I consider myself an obtuse person who's not good at perceiving emotions. I would like to see how everyone fares.

p/s: By the way the BBC Human Body and Mind is a great resource for interactive, educational games. If you have some time to spare, explore a bit and you will certainly be surprised.

A Tricky Question

Updated 05/02/06: See below.

Imagine you are standing in front of a mirror, facing it. Raise your left hand. Raise your right hand. Look at your reflection. When you raise your left hand your reflection raises what appears to be his right hand. But when you tilt your head up, your reflection does too, and does not appear to tilt his/her head down. Why is it that the mirror appears to reverse left and right, but not up and down?
This is allegedly one of the questions from actual interviews conducted by Microsoft. Some of the questions in that page are simply assessments of creativity and out-of-the-box thinking, and that means there are no "right" or "wrong" answers, but only "good" or "mediocre" answers. However, this question is different, and it really stumped me throughout. We all know that a mirror image inverses the left-right direction of an object, but why does it do so on the left-right axis selectively, without affecting the up-down and the forward-backward axis? This is not a "fancy" mind twister, it's in fact one of nature's peculiarity that stares at us all the time.

It took me several "day-dreaming sessions" to figure out a rigorous answer for that. All of a sudden I felt lucky for not pursuing careers that require tremendous ingenuity and creativity. Somehow I think that I have become blunter and slower in mental capacity as I grew up. Does the brain grow old? It might have been so in my case. Sometimes I even blame the medical course for "dumbing and numbing minds", but that was not exactly a good excuse.

Anyway due to time constraint I will just leave the post here and let any interested minds spend a few minutes in that question. I am interested to hear great and elegant answers from anyone. I will post my answer when I am free (if anyone is interested), but it might be a week or two from now, considering that I will fly back to Melbourne this Thursday and prepare for the new semester on next Monday. If you aren't interested in this particular question, the page I mentioned above contain many more questions that could keep you busy for weeks. So I invite everyone to spend some time twisting our brains to keep them sharp and shiny! :)

Update: I haven't had time to put up my own answer in my own words. However, when I was googling randomly I came across one of the explanations for the question. To be frank that explanation was too wordy to my liking so I didn't really finish it. But from what I got at a glance, it seemed like a great explanation. Have a look at some other Q&A inside too. Remember this question? "On Earth, from where can you walk one mile south, one mile east and one mile north and return to the starting point" The answer is surprising.

Be a Man!

******

Update:
Flash changed to a link due to the annoying flushing sound. I thank the feedback from those who complaint. :P

******

Try this flash game for "Male restroom etiquette"
[From akarcade.com]

Be a man, do the right thing!

Urinary FrogRestroom etiquette is the most famous unwritten social contract in our society. It stands proud as the mutual understanding of half the world's population, but magically remains unbeknownst to the rest of the world. Urinals, the most efficient sanitary equipment ever invented by human being is easy to use, almost-perfectly clean, and is where you can look for frogs for a little game of shooting. Not a real one, of course.

Anyway ya, restroom etiquettes. Before you read this, and if you are among those who have never had the privilege to use a urinal, please try the flash game above first. After playing the game, I find myself agreeing with most of the "etiquettes" implied inside, except for the 0/1/0/0/1/1 case. For me, I would go next to the single person instead of the couple... Seriously, what are people thinking? If I go next to the couple, there two persons what will potentially see me, okay?! I will not be so careless leh. As for the 0/1/0/1/0/1/door scenario, I find myself in agreement with the game - unless the urine in my bladder has reached the critical mass, I wouldn't think about breaking the tension in the toilet. It's too dangerous.

Why is it dangerous? Haha, I just learnt that urinals can be a potential trigger of a toilet war... Amazingly, someone actually made a not-too-short video about restroom etiquette and toilet war, and youtube crowd made it one of the most popular videos of all time. It's awesome, and sounds logical except for the part where people start fighting each other.

So I hope you enjoy your "urintiquette" lesson, and put it to good use in the future.

p/s: Haha, while I was looking for a "urinal frog" picture in Flickr, this picture came out. Apparently a doctor ordered for an "urinary frog" in a lab test :P

Is Your Brain the Same Gender as You?

Is your brain male or female? Find out in this very interesting test that I found through Digg: Link

If you're interested, you can read my result here.

******

Footnote: To save myself a little bit of face of having a "female" brain, I would like to clarify two things:

1. For the "rotation" section I made the mistake of choosing only one instead of two answers. Sigh, talk about reading instruction carefully.

2. As for the "female" score of "spot the difference", I think it's due to the well-trained last minute cramming skill, acquired through studying for the final exam. :P

With that I end my excuses for having a slightly female brain.

Can You Hear It?

Do you know that as we grow older, the highest frequency of the sound we could hear actually decreases? We are always told that human can hear sounds from 20Hz to 25kHz, but the upper limit and the lower limit are not constant, and it changes throughout one's life.

Find out your hearing limit now! :)

* This website makes me feel good. I am still "young".

Or maybe you are a mosquito, you certainly can't be human.

The highest pitched ultrasonic mosquito ringtone that I can hear is 21.1kHz
Find out which ringtones you can hear!

How [Un]Malaysian are You?

The following quiz is for fellow Malaysians, and probably, Singaporeans. If you come from anywhere else in the world, you may not understand a single word in the quiz.

Congratulations Chang Yang, you are 13% not Malaysian.

That means you're as Malaysian as...

Abdullah Badawi !

How Un-Malaysian Are You?

I am quite a Malaysian!

Yet another Internet Self-test

Your EQ is 127

50 or less: Thanks for answering honestly. Now get yourself a shrink, quick!
51-70: When it comes to understanding human emotions, you'd have better luck understanding Chinese.
71-90: You've got more emotional intelligence than the average frat boy. Barely.
91-110: You're average. It's easy to predict how you'll react to things. But anyone could have guessed that.
111-130: You usually have it going on emotionally, but roadblocks tend to land you on your butt.
131-150: You are remarkable when it comes to relating with others. Only the biggest losers get under your skin.
150+: Two possibilities - you've either out "Dr. Phil-ed" Dr. Phil... or you're a dirty liar.

I am a .txt!

Italy has just won in a spectacular fashion, and I am going to sleep now... It's funny how I always have a correct guess when I am not gambling (well, only once I did bet on this World Cup).

By the way, it's interesting how they can come up with a test like this: Which file extension are you?

You are .txt The one everybody knows and relies on, but avoids in social settings because you're very boring and non-descript.

Tag Fun (Again?!)

Thanks to See Hua, I have to do this tagging thing again, and this task is even more difficult than the last one, owing to its abstract nature.. :P

Okay, before I continue, I shall proclaim that I will not tag others this time, since I don't want another boomerang. This tagging thing gets quite sick and un-entertaining after some time.

Here goes: 10 things that make happy everyday...

1. Being able to live with people whom I treasure and who treasure me.
2. Waking up to realize that I am still living and doing something meaningful.
3. Realizing that there are people who think of me at this very moment.
4. Knowing there are so many exciting things out there, for me to discover.
5. Talk to friends, really good friends.
6. Learning new things, both online and from books!
7. Knowing that there will always be justice one day.
8. Listening to music and singing along.
9. Being free yet occupied.
10. Eat.

I am pretty happy huh? :D

Med School Nerd Scale

The following is a med school nerdiness checklist courtesy of TonyTutoring. Haha, let's have a go and see how nerdy you are, from the perspective of med school!

The following scale has been developed in close cooperation
with the UVA psychiatry services (Well at least I was thinking
of some of their characteristics and used some of their class
time to compose it). It is designed to test if you have spent
too much time in medical school and whether you are having
adverse side effects due to prolonged exposure.
Score one point for each statement that applies to you.

1 You have ever said "Netter is god".
2 You can discuss autopsy/ anatomy over a meal
3 You own a 4 color pen
4 -it just isn't enough colors for you
5 You use more than one color to take notes
6 You have use up more than 6 highlighters in the past 6 months

Is Tagging that... errr... fun?

Once upon a time I was tagged, and I tagged someone to keep the game going. I wasn't particularly keen about this game actually.. Just playing along for the sake of fun, haha... But then, as the saying goes, what goes around comes around. So today here I am, hit by the boomerang that flies back on my face. Well, here it goes for those who love me so much... *shameless grins*

How To Tag :
- State who tagged you.
- List who you want your Santa Claus to be (the bearer of the gift).
- State the gift you wish to get
- Then invite a few friends to join the tag, and inform them by dropping a comment in their blog

My Santa: Who else except her? :D

Gift for me: An everlasting bliss and love with my loved ones, through thick and thin, in all trials and tribulations.

Who's next: (hate to do this!)
1. Ren Jie (the exams are over now, I guess? :D)
2. Seok Kheng (since you are free for the holidays... )
3. Zhe Jin (to add something non-sentimental to all your sentimental posts!)
4. Wee Loon (haha, someone's in KL too busy horr? :P)

Here we go!! An early Christmas greeting to everyone!
